Why I'm Pro ProPublica.
Thu Jun 26, 2008 at 07:04:04 PM PDT
A few days ago I saw a segment on the new internet journalism site ProPublica on The NewsHour. I was interested for 2 reasons. I'm always looking for good sites that bring together news and opinions such as DKos and HuffPo (although HuffPo isn't what it used to be IMHO). Second, my older daughter is a journalism major.....
Check out ProPublica. I like what I see so far.......
Bill Moyers Journal - June 6th 2008
Fri Jun 06, 2008 at 07:28:34 PM PDT
Tonights Bill Moyers Journal was one of the best broadcasts I've seen in some time. His opening remarks about the nomination of Barack Obama, the second segment with Kathleen Hall Jamieson and Dr Ronald Walters and finally the cherry on top, the segment on Scott McClellen's book and the medias role in the run up to the Iraq War and beyond with DKos's Greg Mitchell and McClatchy's Jonathan Landay and John Walcott.
Must See TV.
Number 1 in America
Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 06:00:43 PM PDT
Today Barack Obama was in Bristol on the Tennessee / Virginia border...
Bristol
When I hear Bristol mentioned I think of a song by David Massengill I first saw performed live by David at a coffee house in Central NJ. That song, "Number One in America" touched something inside me, as well as in many of the audience that day. The song starts:
In Nineteen hundred and sixty-three
In my hometown, Bristol Tennessee
I was sitting on my mother's knee
Watching "Amos 'n' Andy" on TV
But that was not the series of lines that brought back me back to this song many times over the past few months......
Scary Stuff..........
Mon May 12, 2008 at 04:01:54 PM PDT
Yes, McCain as President. Yes, 100 more years of war in the Middle East. Yes, the decline in the dollar and home forclosures. Yes, to more natural disasters and global warming. And yes to 6 more months of election year bs. Following the fold some real scary stuff.....
MS-01? Three in a Row May 13?
Sun May 11, 2008 at 04:14:37 PM PDT
Todays Washington Post talks about the Rs concern about the upcoming special election in Mississippi on May 13th pitting Travis Childers against Greg Davis. Worth checking out the article - especially the comment from VA Congressman Tom Davis........
Danny Federici - Rest in Peace
Fri Apr 18, 2008 at 05:52:07 AM PDT
Haven't seen this posted, but yesterday afternoon, long time E Street Band keyboard player Danny Federici passed away after a 3 year battle with melanoma.
A few days ago I had the pleasure of reading all the posts about Bruce's endorsement of Barack Obama. Now some really sad news. Danny played with Bruce for 40 years going back to before the E Street Band formed in the early 70s. He played the accordian on Sandy. He will be missed.
Is PBS Still Necessary?
Sat Feb 16, 2008 at 05:25:17 PM PDT
On Page 1 of the Sunday NYT Arts & Leisure Section there is an article/editorial from Charles McGrath asking the question "Is PBS Still Necessary?".
To me the answer is a resounding yes. Of course we still use an antennea to watch TV over the public airwaves. No cable guy. And we are doing just fine.
More below the fold..........
Mike Gravel - A Breath of Fresh Air
Mon Oct 01, 2007 at 06:49:06 PM PDT
Watched the interview with Mike Gravel this evening on The NewsHour. Ray Suarez handled the questions. Interesting discussion. Do not agree with some of what Mike preaches - but it is nice to hear a politician talk the way he did tonight. Still not sure why he is in the race, and he has a snowball's chance of getting the nomination. But, anyone who was involved in stopping the draft during Vietnam and getting the Pentagon Papers released deserves a listen.

Zbig Zings Zelikow
Thu Sep 13, 2007 at 07:31:36 PM PDT
With all the attention on The Decider's speech this evening The NewsHour had Philip Zelikow, former aid to Condi Rice, and Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor in the Carter Admin, who recently endorsed Obama, on to discuss the Surge, the Petraeus & Crocker Roadshow and the future of US involvement in Iraq.
Zbig did us all proud and did a number on Zel....

More on Capital Gains vs Ordinary Income
Sat Jul 14, 2007 at 08:11:16 AM PDT
There have been some excellent recent diaries about the issue of income being taxed at 15% (capital gains) vs. as ordinary income. With everything going on this week regarding the Meirs and Taylor hearings, the Moyers broadcast, vote in the House to bring our troops home, and the Home Run Derby, this shouldn't get lost...

In Friday's NYT there were two items that caught my eye, a front page story about tax loopholes and Paul Krugman's editorial in which he states:
"A couple of weeks ago, Warren Buffett pointed out that he pays on average federal income tax of 17.7 percent while his receptionist pays about 30 percent"
